This summer we hit the ground running with a goal of removing invasive species to restore our waterways! Led by our own Matt Moreland, we partnered with Mt. Hood Community College’s Project YESS and Northwest Youth Corps to target a newer invasive in the basin- Policeman’s Helmet.
We targeted areas of reported infestation, including Salmon River side channels, Brightwood, and Zigzag. With funding from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, we were able to meet Clackamas County Soil & Water Conservation District project goals. After tallying it up, we treated over 10,000 lineal feet and removed over 3,800 invasive plants!
This effort built upon an outreach campaign that started with our Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) invasive plant workshop held this June. By removing Policeman’s Helmet after germination but before seed-set, we are able to reduce the number of seeds that spread via our waterways.
For a detailed description and photos of Policeman’s Helmet, visit the ODA website. You can report sightings of this invasive species at http://oregoninvasiveshotline.org or by emailing our stewardship coordinator.
